Her entry was one of 187 received by the June 7 deadline, according to Duck Tape. “It did not seem like it was going to look good,” she said.īut by the end of a week, the dress - made up of several pieces including wing-like sleeves - came together into something she could wear, if not to an actual dance. She worked on her bedroom floor to craft the design elements. Ziqin started her creation by affixing the tape to a mannequin, then peeling it off to shape it around her own body. The Duck Tape dress was influenced by clothing from the Tang and Qing dynasties, Ziqin wrote in her entry form, with the flowers depicted on the dress -a chrysanthemum and a Chinese rose - pulled from plant knowledge she’s gained at the shop. She wanted her dress to represent “my interaction with my heritage and my culture,” she said. Ziqin was adopted from China and now has an internship at a Chinese medicine and herbalist shop. Though the contest opened March 29, Ziqin did not start work on hers until the school year ended, so she spent a frantic week designing and crafting in her bedroom to meet the June 7 entry deadline.
